April 21-28: Our own Dr. Benjamin Levine, Dr. Michal Kozanek, PT Lauren Doherty, PTA Bill Martin and OT Beth Keelan all recently returned from a week-long mission trip to the Dominican Republic, sponsored by Children of the Nations. They had a full case load and helped as many people as they could while they were there.
One case in particular stood out. A 17 year-old had a knee deformity from an accident that happened when he was 14. The accident caused damage to the outside part of the growth plates which caused them to stop growing while the inside growth plates continued on as normal. They corrected the deformity and had to improvise, as they do not have all of the materials that they would here in the U.S. They bring many of their own materials with them, usually resulting in 10+ suitcases of medical necessities. To the right is a before and after of this case.
What’s most notable is the lack of access to basic healthcare or housing. Patients line up to be seen when they know surgeons and therapists are coming. The case above is a perfect example: people walk around for years with injuries that would be fixed immediately if they had the resources available for them to do so. It is a very humbling experience for all involved.
Lauren summed it up perfectly: “I went to help those in need but little did I know that they would help me too.”
April 7: Dr. Benjamin Levine and Dr. Peter Yeh attended the Stoneham Health and Wellness Expo at the Stoneham Middle School. Many people stopped by and it was a great event!

Excel Orthopaedic Specialists
The contest was held by Move2Perform. They were looking for programs using Move2Perform software to help better their communities. Our baseline concussion testing and movement screening program won runner up in the contest.
“At Excel Orthopaedics, a large orthopedic practice in Woburn, MA, we have begun utilizing the Move2Perform software and testing program as a key component in assisting clinical decision making, preseason athlete screening and programing for performance training. We have been using M2P with our return to sport testing program for about a year and it has given us valuable objective data to help guide the return to sport decision making process with our athletes. We are now expanding our offerings to preseason athlete screenings and return to sport/injury prevention performance training and M2P will be a key component of both programs. Our preseason screenings are designed for youth sports teams and leagues and provide both injury risk screening using M2P and baseline concussion testing through ImPACT baseline testing. We will provide athletes with exercises to reduce the risk of injury or use their M2P results to help individualize the athletes’ training. The baseline concussion test will help guide management by the athlete’s doctor or certified concussion specialist if a concussion is suspected during the season. We hope to also use the data from the preseason screenings for research to help identify modifiable risk factors related to deficits in neuromuscular control and fundamental movement as they relate to concussions. Funding for this kind of program is a major hurdle for youth sports leagues.”
I wanted to send a big thank you to all of the people who donated and walked with us in the Walk to Defeat ALS last weekend in Wakefield. We had turnout at the lake of over 40 walkers to represent Teddy’s Team and together with about 70 donations we raised $3,255! As a bonus to our great efforts the company that I work for, Eisai Research Institute, is going to match all the funds that I raised online ($2,455) to bring the Teddy’s Team total to $5,710! With the cash and checks that each of us turned in the day of the walk, our Teddy’s Team total is well over $6,000.00!
My family and I are very humbled and proud of the outpouring of support and love that we have received over the past 9 months from our family and friends. Please know that everything you have done and continue to do is a blessing that we are grateful for each day. This past weekend was certainly a testament to that.
My dad also wanted to me to say a big hello and thank you to all of you! Your visits, hugs and well wishes all keep a smile on his face each day! Thank you all again from the bottom of our hearts!
Here are some picture which include most of the walkers on Saturday. My dad couldn’t believe how many people showed up to support him!
